Give Your Customer Dads the Gift of Gardening
Father’s Day being in June makes it a perfect opportunity for your customers to enjoy some outdoor activities with dad, whether he loves to be out on the lake, behind the grill, or getting his hands dirty in the garden.
Practical dads will especially love that gardening trends have continued to move towards choosing plants for more than just being nice to look at, but that also take sustainability and utility into account. (This will give your dad one more pun to use when he says he grows character.)
Here are five 2025 trends in gardening that your green-thumb-dad-loving customers are shopping for.
1. Pest-repelling plants are great garden starters
Many popular plants, in addition to being beautiful and/or delicious, also have the useful property of deterring many annoying garden pests. Aromatic kitchen staples like basil, rosemary, garlic, and mint will repel invaders like mosquitos, flies, aphids, and slugs. The same goes for flowers like lavender, chrysanthemum, and marigold. You can help dad’s garden smell more pleasantly fragrant and keep away pests in one fell swoop.
2. Pollinator promoters for fast flourishing
On the other hand, there are certain little bugs and critters that you absolutely do want to attract to your garden to help it thrive: pollinators! Bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, and others all play a vital role in the lifecycle of your plants, and anything you can do to encourage them will be a boon to your local ecosystem. Flowers like lavender, snapdragons, and zinnias, to name a few, will draw them, as well as herbs like cilantro, parsley, basil, and dill.
3. Succulents (for the less engaged dads out there)
Succulents are so popular because they’re as easy to take care of as they are beautiful and interesting to look at. They can thrive anywhere from tiny window pots in shady apartments to brightly lit garden plots. There are also a huge range of different types, from jades to cacti, ready to add some exciting and low-maintenance visual variety to any plant collection.
4. Native plants will play nicely with the area you live in
It’s been increasingly trendy for a while to replace the water-hungry invasive monoculture of grass lawns with a selection of plants that are native to whatever area you live in. Even if you don’t go all-in on re-wilding your outdoor space, plants native to the area are going to be more likely to thrive with less effort on your part, and likely less water. Just like with plants that attract pollinators, native plants will be generally beneficial to your local ecosystem.
5. Edible plants (yes, help dad’s garden become a resource!)

Don’t worry, dad, we didn’t say Oedipal plants! Besides looking good, doing a little at-home agriculture can be nutritious and cost-saving. Pantry staples like garlic, onions, and potatoes are easy to grow and can be used a thousand different ways. Zucchinis, tomatoes, cucumbers, kale, and more–dad can have his favorites on hand. Any Father’s Day BBQ would be enhanced with a fresh garden salad and some grilled veggies.
